I’ve never been one for using the more ‘alternative’ film stocks. Freaky oranges and turquoise across my frames… No thanks! That just seems too ‘fake filter’ to me. To go in the same box of hell that is the red double decker bus against the black and white cityscape!
Then, one day a kind film photographer friend gave me a roll of 35mm Lomochrome Purple on a photo walk and I decided to embrace it. Well, it would be rude not too! So, I loaded up my trusty old Canon EOS 300 set the ISO to 200 and took it for a spin (actually two outings).
The first was in the City of London. A couple frames of buildings that I thought looked interesting and combined colours I thought would shift. Then a couple weeks later and the camera came out again on a lovely sunny mid September day where I decided to venture to my local open space, Hollow Pond part of Epping Forest and then onto Leytonstone, East London. Mixing up the nature with the urban would give me a good feel for what this film could do.
So, what are my impressions? Well, I have to eat my opening words. I actually REALLY like the results. Its freaky, it confuses my mind and that makes me read the images differently. That Leytonstone tube station sign should be blue – yet its green?! The flowers were purple, yet they appear white?! The sky is teal?! This is London – WTF! Arrrrhhhh my brain hurts like I’ve just done 100 sudoku’s and starred at a 3d illusions for 10 hours. That must be a good thing, right?
Will I buy some Lomochrome Purple? Yes, I believe I will, for nothing else than to tickle those parts of my brain that don’t get a work out very often.
